What Is an Aluminum Launder?

What Is an Aluminum Launder?

An aluminum launder is a refractory-lined channel or transfer system used to safely transport molten aluminum from a furnace, holding furnace, or melting unit to casting and other downstream processing equipment.

In aluminum plants, the launder plays an important role in maintaining stable molten aluminum flow while minimizing heat loss, turbulence, oxidation, and contamination during transfer.

What Is an Aluminum Launder Used For?

An aluminum launder is mainly used to:

  • Transfer molten aluminum between furnaces and casting equipment

  • Control the direction and flow of molten aluminum

  • Reduce heat loss during aluminum transfer

  • Minimize turbulence and oxide formation

  • Maintain stable molten aluminum flow to the casting line

  • Connect different sections of an aluminum production line

Depending on the production process, a launder can be installed between a melting furnace, holding furnace, filtration system, degassing unit, distribution box, or casting machine.

How Does an Aluminum Launder Work?

Molten aluminum flows through the launder under controlled conditions. The internal refractory lining provides thermal insulation and protects the metal-contact surface from high-temperature molten aluminum.

A properly designed launder should provide:

  • Smooth and stable molten aluminum flow

  • Suitable flow capacity

  • Good thermal insulation

  • High resistance to thermal shock

  • Resistance to molten aluminum corrosion and erosion

  • Easy installation and maintenance

The design of the launder depends on the aluminum alloy, molten metal temperature, flow rate, production capacity, furnace layout, and casting equipment.

What Is an Aluminum Launder Made Of?

An aluminum launder typically consists of a steel outer structure and a refractory lining or castable working lining.

The refractory material is selected according to the operating temperature, molten aluminum contact conditions, required service life, and production process.

For demanding applications, the lining may be designed to provide improved resistance to:

  • Molten aluminum penetration

  • Corrosion

  • Erosion

  • Thermal shock

  • Thermal cycling

The correct refractory lining is important because it directly affects the service life and reliability of the launder.

Types of Aluminum Launders

Different aluminum plants may use different launder configurations, including:

Straight Aluminum Launder

A straight launder is commonly used for simple molten aluminum transfer between two production units.

Customized Aluminum Launder

Customized launders are designed according to the plant layout, furnace position, casting machine, transfer distance, and required flow direction.

Refractory-Lined Aluminum Launder

A refractory-lined launder provides thermal protection and a durable working surface for continuous molten aluminum transfer.

Integrated Launder System

For more complex production lines, the launder can be integrated with filtration, degassing, heating, or distribution equipment.

How to Choose an Aluminum Launder?

When selecting an aluminum launder, aluminum plants should consider more than the channel dimensions. Important factors include:

  1. Molten aluminum flow rate – The launder should handle the required production capacity without restricting flow.

  2. Furnace and casting line layout – The dimensions and configuration should match the actual installation space.

  3. Molten aluminum temperature – The refractory lining must be suitable for the operating temperature.

  4. Alloy and process conditions – Different alloys and production processes may require different lining materials.

  5. Transfer distance – Longer transfer distances require careful consideration of thermal insulation and heat loss.

  6. Maintenance requirements – The structure should allow convenient inspection, cleaning, and refractory maintenance.

For aluminum plants, a custom-designed launder system is often more practical than a standard-size channel because production lines, furnace configurations, and casting equipment vary from plant to plant.

Why Is Refractory Lining Important?

The refractory lining is one of the most important components of an aluminum launder. It separates the molten aluminum from the structural shell and provides resistance against high temperature, erosion, corrosion, and thermal cycling.

A suitable refractory lining can help improve launder durability and maintain a stable molten aluminum transfer process.

Proper drying and preheating are also important before putting a newly installed refractory-lined launder into operation. This helps remove residual moisture and gradually brings the lining to the required operating condition.
